Cleansing Crystals and Gemstones

Cleansing crystals and gemstones is an important step in having your stones work for you. Learn how to clear and cleanse your newly purchased stones and gems.

About a month ago I took a mini-vacation and purchased a few polished stones and some pieces of crystal and amethyst. You can read more about the crystals and gemstones I purchased here.

After I got them home, I went about cleansing each of the crystals and stones. Clearing residual energy from the stones you purchase is an important step in making each of the items work specifically for you.

Who Knows Where that Crystal Has Been?

The reason that you need to cleanse items purchased for psychic or energy work is that you have no idea whose energy is attached to the items. Think of just how many people have touched the item you just purchased. From the person that mined the stone, to the person that polished the stone, to the shipper, and the retailer, the stone could have absorbed many different energies along the way.

In order to make the stone or crystal work in the way it was intended, it is important to begin with a blank slate. If you need to trust the feeling and information you are receiving via healing stones, you need to erase any existing energies attached to the stones before you begin using them.

This is the first of two steps to making your stones and crystals charged specifically to your own energy. The second involves charging the objects with your energy.

Cleansing Crystals and Gemstones

Here are three different methods for cleansing crystals and gemstones:

Salt Method

Purchase a canister of sea salt (table salt will not work) and pour a good amount into a small dish. Do not add water. Place 1-3 stones in the dish, making sure they do not touch each other, and bury them until they are covered with more sea salt. Keep covered for 24 hours and then rinse and dry the items. Keep the sea salt handy as it can be re-used for future stone purchases.

Sea salt absorbs the energies present in the stone or crystal and brings things back to neutral and then the object is ready to be charged.

Earth Method

Use one of your houseplants or outdoor plants  and place your stones in the soil at the base of the plant for 24 hours. Wash and dry the stones. The energy field from the plant will draw any residual energy and cleanse the crystals and gemstones.

Water Method

Wash the gemstones in hot, and then in cold running water. Repeat the process three times. This is by far the quickest and easiest method.

Any of the above methods are equally successful in cleansing residual energies. There are other methods as well like using the moon phases that require a bit more timing.

Once you have cleansed your crystals and gemstones, you are now ready to charge the objects with your own energy. I will be writing on that in an upcoming post.

How do you cleanse your crystals? Which is your favorite method? I would love it if you would share your ideas in the comments below.

    • Hi Santosh,

You only need to do one of the three methods to cleanse your gemstones.

If the pearl cannot be separated from the other two stones, I would recommend using the water method for all of them. You need to be careful with the pearl, as it can be more easily damaged. I would not use the salt method on the pearl. Each of the methods are equally effective for cleansing residual energies.

If they are separate rings, the yellow sapphire and emerald can be cleansed with any of the three methods, but the pearl should be cleansed with the water method.

  2. I have great success w/table salt that has not been used. I place my item(s) on a window ledge where it/they can get Sun rays. Then I make a circle around them with the “virgin” salt. I start this at sun up and they are cleansed by sundown. Doesn’t work during inclement weather (LOL)

  3. I find the best way of cleaning birthstone jewelry is using a damp cotton bud and dabbing a little bicarbonate of soda on it to gently clean gemstones. And then clean off with just a damp cotton bud.

  4. Hello hello! I think it may also be important to note that some crystals will actually TELL you how they want to be cleansed. When I was given my rose quartz pendulum as a gift I simply thought of how I should cleanse it.. didn’t really have the intention of asking to be honest.. I immediately got a flash of a snowy hill with gusting snow flurries and a brewing snowstorm. My rose quartz REALLY likes the snow. Ironic, because I’m a february baby and I absolutely dislike the snow. But to each crystal their own.

Anyhow, I also recently bought a crystal.. Unfortunately it was in the wrong place when I bought it and the shopkeeper said it wasn’t a phantom quartz like I thought.. Regardless, it’s energy and clarity is phenomenal. It’s also a Lemurian crystal. Aaaanyhow, i tried to communicate with the crystal and asked it to view my memory images about cleansing methods and locations to see where it would have liked to go. I exhaled on it to clear it, and infuse my soul’s energy. I later went to my grandparents’ house for an errand and brought the crystal upstairs to their beautiful large and very old Aloe Vera plant. I held the crystal above it to see if it wanted to be cleansed in the pot with the plant and it IMMEDIATELY started vibrating very strongly in my hand, so i put it in the plant. I will return to get it once it vibes at me that it’s ready.

All this to say, that regardless of all cleansing techniques there are out there, which ones you as the owner like and dislike, the crystals can also like and dislike, and maybe you’ll like a method in common (usually most likely) and perhaps they’ll like a method we as owners do not… But they’re the bosses when it comes to their cleansing! So I recommend people also do a little bit of listenning to their crystals for a few days before cleansing them for the first time.

  5. How can I tell if a gemstone likes or dislikes me? Particularly the stones for a pendulum. I have a tigers eye pendulum and a black obsidian amplifier and when I tried to check the calibration of it and when I asked it to signal yes then it spun wide in the yes circle and I had to angle my arm so it was paralell with the floor because of the wide swinging of the stone was hitting my arm.
