You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks

Is the proverb “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” intertwined in your thoughts? Find out if your age has anything to do with upgrading your life and circumstances.

This is another post in my series which digs deeper into meanings of proverbs. Sometimes you can find useful grains of truth within proverbs and other times their meanings can show you where you are settling for less than you are capable of having.

What The Proverb “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks” Really Means:

Do you feel like the “old dog” sometimes? There can be certain points where you might feel like your life is at a standstill. You can feel like there is no more time to change the future and there is no time left to take a new path to a new destination.

You can even feel like there is no reason to change your thinking as you cannot see that anything could change for you as a result. This can leave you with a feeling of “why bother?”

Here’s the Truth:

Everyone ages, but I feel you make the choice to become old. One of the best things you have going is the ability to choose your thoughts and your next actions. You always have the ability to learn something new, create a new habit and reinvent your life at any age.

Take a minute and think about some of the older people in your family, either alive or deceased. How did they think and talk about aging, retirement, and new ideas? Often somewhere in there we have adopted beliefs from others that just do not suit us or our needs any longer. Is this really your own belief or is it someone else’s?

It pays to look deep into the origins of beliefs like this one. If we adopt the thought that we cannot change our circumstances after some specific age, you are fighting against yourself.

How This Affects Your Intuition:

When the pattern of thinking creeps in that you are too old to start down a new path, don’t believe the lie! Stop settling for something you don’t want and begin to create something better. So ask yourself, “If I didn’t have this belief, what would I do next?” Then get started!
