How to use a Dowsing Pendulum

Learn how to use a dowsing pendulum to receive answers from your higher self. Learn to program your pendulum and the right questions to ask.

Learning to use a dowsing pendulum is fairly easy, but there are a few factors to be aware of including clearing and charging a pendulum and also knowing how to ask proper questions to get clear answers that come from your higher self.

Clearing the Pendulum

Have you recently purchased a dowsing pendulum? You MUST clear the energies from the piece before you begin to use it. By not doing so, you are still harboring the energies of another within the piece. Always begin with a fresh slate and charge the piece to your own energies before you begin to ask questions with your pendulum. By not doing so, your pendulum will not give you correct, authentic answers from your higher self. The answers may contradict themselves and may not be your truth.

I have written about before about cleansing and clearing crystals and gemstones. The exact same techniques apply for a dowsing pendulum. Bookmark this page and come back after you have cleared your divination tool.

Charging and Programming your Pendulum

By charging and programming your pendulum, you are attuning it to your own energies. This is a very important step and will determine the quality of the answers you receive.

The technique I used is described in the book Unlock Your Intuition by Andrea Hess. You really need to do the exercise from the book to properly charge your pendulum.

After the pendulum is attuned to your energies, you will ask it to show you a yes response, a no response, and an undecided response.

Please keep your pendulum in a safe place and make sure no one else touches it, as their energies can get transferred to the piece.

Proper Questions to Ask

Do not begin your questions with the word “should”, as it comes from a place of confusion or uncertainty. Instead begin your questions with something like this: Is my current job aligned with my Soul’s highest path and purpose? You can then dowse for a specific percent.

The book below, written by Andrea Hess goes into great detail about the proper types of questions to ask and how to ask them. Please take a look, it is a worthwhile purchase and will help you considerably in learning proper dowsing techniques.

Cleansing Crystals and Gemstones

Cleansing your crystals and gemstones is an important step in having your stones work for you. Learn how to clear and cleanse your newly purchased stones and gems.

About a month ago I took a mini-vacation and purchased quite a few polished stones and some pieces of crystal and amethyst. You can read more about the crystals and gemstones I purchased here.

After I got them home, I went about cleansing each of the crystals and stones. Clearing residual energy from the stones you purchase is an important step in making each of the items work specifically for you.

Who Knows Where that Crystal Has Been?

The reason that you need to cleanse items purchased for psychic or energy work is that you have no idea whose energy is attached to the items. Think of just how many people have touched the item you just purchased. From the person that mined the stone, to the person that polished the stone, to the shipper, and the retailer, the stone could have absorbed many different energies along the way.

In order to make the stone or crystal work in the way it was intended, it is important to begin with a blank slate. If you need to trust the feeling and information you are receiving via healing stones, you need to erase any existing energies attached to the stones before you begin using them.

This is the first of two steps to making your stones and crystals charged specifically to your own energy. The second involves charging the objects with your energy.

How to Cleanse Your Crystals and Gemstones

Here are three different methods for cleansing your crystals and gemstones:

Salt Method

Purchase a canister of sea salt (table salt will not work) and pour a good amount into a small dish. Do not add water. Place 1-3 stones in the dish, making sure they do not touch each other, and bury them until they are covered with more sea salt. Keep covered for 24 hours and then rinse and dry the items. Keep the sea salt handy as it can be re-used for future stone purchases.

Sea salt absorbs the energies present in the stone or crystal and brings things back to neutral and then the object is ready to be charged.

Earth Method

Use one of your houseplants or outdoor plants and place your stones in the soil at the base of the plant for 24 hours. Wash and dry the stones. The energy field from the plant will draw any residual energy and cleanse the crystals and gemstones.

Water Method

Wash the gemstones in hot, and then in cold running water. Repeat the process three times. This is by far the quickest and easiest method.

Any of the above methods are equally successful in cleansing residual energies. There are other methods as well like using the moon phases that require a bit more timing.

Once you have cleansed your crystals and gemstones, you are now ready to charge the objects with your own energy. I will be writing on that in an upcoming post.

A synopsis of my crystals and gemstones purchases from our recent travels including a beautiful piece of Amethyst, a dowsing pendulum, and other stones.

In my last post, I wrote that I was going to take a few days off. I am back from a fairly brief vacation and thought I would share with you a few of my finds and treasures. I love it when you go somewhere for relaxation and can still manage to find items that you are really interested in.

We went to Door County, WI for a few days and then to Wisconsin Dells for a few days. It was very nice to be able to get away from the routine of the summer, which has been very busy.

So, what did you buy on vacation?

Umm…Rocks. Really cool looking rocks.

It was sort of funny, but I think I managed to find the only metaphysical shop in all of Door County, without even trying to find it. We were walking around looking at the various shops and it just found me.

I ended up purchasing a dowsing pendulum there and a very pretty bag for storing it, scroll down for photo. Here is another post I wrote a while ago on choosing a dowsing pendulum if you are interested in learning more about them.

Nearby was a great little stone shop that had a nice selection of crystals and gemstones. I of course had to buy some to add to my collection. My HB is not all that into stone shopping, so he waited patiently outside while I had my fun shopping.

In Wisconsin Dells we found the Dells Mining Company. It is a pretty interesting place where you can buy buckets of soil from North Carolina mines and whatever stones are in the bucket you get to keep. They help you identify any that are worth something too. They also have a nice selection of polished stones you can purchase individually, which is what I did.

How to Choose a Dowsing Pendulum

Learn how to choose a dowsing pendulum that is right for you by finding one that appeals to your sense of color, size, and shape. A pendulum can be made from metal, wood, or crystal stones, with each having different properties.

You can choose a pendulum based on balance, form, color, or the properties of the stone if you are looking at crystals. Pendulums can be made from metal, wood, or crystal stones, each having different properties. If you choose a crystal pendulum, each stone has different properties and you can choose based on what each stone offers. A wood pendulum has a smooth, solid, earthy feel to it. A metal pendulum also has a smooth feel, but is heavier in weight and gives a sense of balance.

You first either need to purchase a pendulum or make your own. I would recommend for a beginner that you purchase a pendulum. Each has a chain attached that is about 10 inches long and then a small counter weight or crystal at the other end. There are many places online that you can buy a dowsing pendulum, or if you have a local metaphysical bookstore, you may be able to buy one there as well.

There is no specific type of pendulum that necessarily works better than another, it really comes down to personal taste and finding one that resonates with you. For a beginner, try to find one that seems responsive to your energies. You can either purchase one based strictly on its vibration and how you feel when looking at it, or you can test out a variety and see which one feels better in your hand and is the most responsive to a few basic yes/no question.

Most pendulums range from about $15.00 to $50.00, with the majority being around $20.00 to $30.00. For a fairly low initial investment and perhaps a book on dowsing, you can begin to learn to connect to your higher self.

This is an item that will be tuned to your specific energy, so please don’t share your pendulum with a friend or family member. If they are also interested in learning how to dowse, it would make a wonderful gift idea.

Find a spot to store your pendulum. Many do come with a storage pouch, but it would also be a good idea to find a special box to put it in when not in use. You want an out of the way place where others will not touch it, as others can transfer their energy to the pendulum, thus muddying your answers and not giving you accurate information.

Why Dowse?

This method of divining can be a very useful tool for answering many of the questions that come up in day to day life and trusting the answers you receive. It can be used to find lost and misplaced items, answer questions about an upcoming trip, a new love in your life, health questions, missing nutrients in your diet, potential career moves, or questions about money and finance.

A pendulum is fairly easy to learn how to use and does not require years of study to become confident in your abilities, although of course just like anything else the more you practice dowsing, the better you will become. By asking specific yes and no questions and also using percentage tables to narrow down your responses, you can make quite a bit of progress on issues that may not have had clear answers to you before.

I have been using a pendulum for about a year now. It is fairly easy to learn, but the key to its accuracy is the quality of your questions. By learning how to ask better questions, the reliability of your answers increases.

One of the things I like best about using a dousing pendulum is that it’s very portable and it doesn’t take a lot of set up to use. In order to begin you recite a small paragraph so that the answers you are receiving are coming from your true higher self.
